Melbournians are passionate about their major public events, and the Melbourne Cup is probably the one celebration of the year that can boast of ‘stopping the entire nation’. This Melbourne Event held on the first Tuesday of November, the Melbourne Cup attracts significant numbers of participants. Last year it attracted 729,000 people, who injected over $541 million into the Victorian economy.

It is the foremost horse race in the Spring Racing Carnival, an event which spans almost two months from early October to late November. It consists of ten primary race days which include: Caulfield Cup Day, held at Caulfield Racing Club, Cox’s Plate, at Moonee Valley and Victoria Derby, Oaks Day and Stakes Day all held at Flemington.

The first Tuesday of November is a public holiday and many Melbournians take a long four-day weekend. The thousands that attend Cup Day, at Flemington Race Course, pay particular attention to their attire. It is as much a fashion parade and veritable feast for the eyes of pretty parading fillies and handsome studs, of the two legged variety, as much as for the noble four legged kind. Champagne flows, delicious delicacies are consumed in marquees, bets are won and lost. It’s a party to be remembered and everyone prays for good weather!

The Moto Grand Prix Motorbike Racing Championships are also held in November, at Phillip Island, a popular holiday destination about two hours from Melbourne.

Melbourne then moves into a frenzy of big event activity. Here are a few of the main ones: Boxing Day, cricket at the MCG, Australian Tennis Open at the Rod Laver Arena in January.

March bring the Moomba Parade which is held in the City along with the Formula One, Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park. This is a 16-turn, smooth, high-speed test circuit currently measuring 5.3 kilometres. The event attracts world wide attention and audiences of up to 401,000 have been recorded.

Easter, brings the Pro Surfing Championships at Bells Beach, near Torquay, about an hour south west of Melbourne. Continuing on from Torquay visitors can take a scenic drive along the Great Ocean Road to Lorne and Apollo Bay, both beautiful and very popular holiday destinations, and then onto the Twelve Apostles, stunning great pillars of rock lining the shore – not to be missed.

Melbourne Events in September brings the AFL (Australian Football League) Grand Finals which culminates eight months of competitive sport avidly watched and wagered upon, every move discussed and dissected by its enthralled multitude of fans. The winning team is paraded through the streets of Melbourne and another party gets underway.

And finally the Queen’s Birthday weekend. This is the official opening of the Ski Season and the beginning of the Australian winter in June. Melbourne sees a mass exodus of people heading off towards the slopes; vehicles bulge with ski gear and the essential accoutrements required for serious partying and celebrating. The three day weekend takes place at a number of Victorian resorts. Mt Buller is about three hours north east of Melbourne. This is a major resort with 26 lifts and 75 kilometres of graded runs, plus an abundance of cross country ski routes. The village offers private and commercial lodges, a host of very good restaurants, bars and eateries, or take your own.

Further out, Falls Creek , about six hours from Melbourne, is the largest resort with some 4000 beds and Mount Hotham is the highest alpine resort in Victoria. All resorts can be accessed all year round, but check availability before departure.
